U.S. cattle herd continues decline
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the U.S. in feedlots of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.4 million head Oct. 1, according to a USDA report last week. This is 1% below the Oct. 1, 2021, count, but up 2.4% compared to last month.

Iowa’s inventory remained flat year-over-year, at 600,000 head in feedlots of 1,000 or more head. Similar to the national total, Iowa’s census was 2% above the Sept. 1 count.
