The total U.S. milk and beef cattle herd was 95.9 million head on July 1, down 3% from July 1, 2022, according to the twice-annual census of all cattle from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), published last week. 

Milk cows, at 9.4 million head, are unchanged from the previous year.
