Iowa continues to be the U.S. leader in pork production, the latest quarterly hogs and pigs report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows. As of Dec. 1, 2016, there were a record 22.4 million head of hogs and pigs on Iowa farms, up 7 percent from 2015, the USDA report showed.

The U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs was 71.5 million head, up 4 percent from Dec. 1, 2015.

The Iowa breeding inventory, at 1.03 million head, was unchanged from 2015.

The U.S. breeding inventory, at 6.09 million head, was up 1 percent from last year.
