Build a team and set a plan to smooth farm transitions

Making the transition from one generation to the next requires a good team and a solid plan,  farm succession experts said last week.

Transitioning a family’s farm business to the next generation should involve careful thought and consideration, said David Baker, farm transition specialist for the Beginning Farmer Center at Iowa State University.

Baker told a group of 200 farmers last week at the Farming for the Future Conference in Ames that there are a lot of things to consider, including a systematic transfer of assets and management  from one owner...
