Top 10 tips for managing manure applications this fall

Harvest season is coming quick and with it manure application. This year we are going to do something a little different, so with all respect to David Letterman, here is a “top 10” list for using your manure. (That’s a list you don’t want to get behind.)
So without further ado, let’s get to it.
1. Biosecurity: In recent years, we’ve dealt with cases of PEDV and avian influenza. In both cases, manure can be a significant risk in the transmission of these and other diseases.
However, there are a few things we can do to reduce the risk, starting with cleaning and disinfecting equipment between sites, creating and abiding by lines of separation (clean and dirty side), and staying out of the barn if at all possible.
