With a record corn crop expected in 2025, Iowa farmers are weighing storage decisions and face a mixed outlook, according to a new analysis from Iowa Farm Bureau and Decision Innovation Solutions.

The report projects that on-farm storage will generate strong positive returns — especially for corn — while commercial storage is expected to produce losses during much of the 2026 marketing year.

“Every farm is different, but this analysis shows that there might be opportunities this year to utilize on-farm storage to take advantage of substantial carry in some of the deferred futures contract months,” said Christopher Pudenz, economics and research manager at Iowa Farm Bureau.
