On Oct. 3, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) announced a new health benefit option for Iowans who don’t have access to employer-sponsored health insurance and therefore must purchase it on their own.

Many of these individuals are currently uninsured because they cannot afford the high cost of premiums of unsubsidized plans offered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The plans were authorized by the Iowa Legislature with broad bipartisan support during the 2018 legislative session. It allows IFBF to provide an underwritten health benefit plan to its members. Farm Bureau Health Benefit Plan LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of IFBF, will provide these plans.

Since that time, there has been significant media coverage of the new plans that hasn’t always accurately reflected the facts about the plans.

To provide our members accurate information on key attributes of the new Farm Bureau Health Plan, the Spokesman last week visited with Steve Kammeyer, Farm Bureau Health Plan vice president.
