Despite depressed commodity prices, Iowa livestock raisers are still calling the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF) with questions about potential barn sites and the rules and regulations that come with maintaining or expanding a farm site.

The majority of the calls lately have been from cattle farmers interested in raising cattle under roof, says Brian Waddingham, CSIF’s executive director. Perhaps, Waddingham says, farmers are becoming more interested in feeding the corn they’re growing to livestock to “walk” the grain off the farm. It may be more valuable that way, he says.

“The best way to add value to your corn is by feeding it to livestock,” Waddingham said.
