The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) is of­fering its members an opportunity to participate in an intensive four-day market study tour to California in March 2024 to investigate the implementation and impacts of the state’s Prop 12 law.

Prop 12 prohibits the sale of pork in California that isn’t produced according to the state’s arbitrary production standards. It would force hog farmers in Iowa and other states who want to sell pork in California to retrofit existing barns or design new housing systems, leaving Iowa farmers with many questions about the future of pork production and regulatory compliance. 

The market study trip will provide Farm Bureau members the opportunity to gain updates and insight about Prop 12 directly from stakeholders across the pork supply chain, including California farmers, meat distributors, food retailers, researchers and other food and agricultural experts, said Iowa Farm Bureau Economics and Research Manager...
