Exploring Prairie Establishment and Management

Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with C-CHANGE: Grass2Gas, invites farmers, landowners and conservation professionals to a virtual field day focused on establishing and managing prairie perennial vegetation. The event will feature Carl Kurtz—writer, teacher, naturalist and photographer—who brings more than 50 years of experience in prairie establishment and management.

Participants will learn how prairie systems can support pollinators, reduce erosion, improve soil health, enhance wildlife habitat and contribute to renewable natural gas production.

Woodland Management and Water Quality Workshop

Tuesday, February 17 | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Grundy Center, Iowa

Join Iowa Learning Farms and Iowa State University for a workshop exploring how woodland management and woodchip bioreactors can reduce nitrate loss and improve water quality.

Led by ISU Extension Forestry Specialist Billy Beck and ISU Professor Michelle Soupir, the session will share research on using low-value timber species in bioreactors to meet both landowner management goals and statewide water quality objectives.

Cover Crop and Soil Health Workshop

Thursday, February 19 | 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Mount Pleasant, Iowa

Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Lower Skunk River WQI Project and Pathfinders RC&D, invites farmers and landowners to a workshop focused on practical cover crop and no-till management.

The agenda includes a panel of local cover crop users sharing tips for getting started and staying with the practice. Iowa NRCS Soil Health Specialist J.D. Hollingsworth and Area Resource Soil Scientist Jason Steele will discuss how cover crops and no-till impact soil health, and ILF’s Liz Ripley will share research-based best management practices from farms across Iowa.
