Spring begins with above-normal soil moisture

The climatological winter season of 2015-16, which wrapped up at the end of February, will go into the record books as warmer than normal for Iowa due in large part to the unseasonably warm December.
Winter precipitation from December to February will also average above normal for Iowa, with the unusually wet December conditions being the dominant factor.
The latest data from the U.S. Climate Prediction Center indicates that total soil moisture in about the top five feet of soil is above normal in most of Iowa.
