Report shows interest in expanding pork output
The U.S. and Iowa hog and pig inventory shows farmers are interested in raising more hogs as prices soar, analyst said. The report, however, didn’t show a clear impact of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) on the U.S. swine herd.
The United States inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2014 was 62.9 million head, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) quarterly hogs and pigs report said last week. This was down 3 percent from March 1, 2013. Iowa’s March 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs was 19.8 million, the report said. This was down from 20.1 million on March 1, 2013, the report said.
