Next to weather, nitrogen management is among the most important factors that impact corn standability, yield and profitability.

Jim McDermott, DEKALB Asgrow technical agronomist serving northwest Iowa, recommends that farmers evaluate their current nutrient management program to consider what changes, if any, may be needed for 2019 spring planting.

That’s especially important, he says, in areas of the state that experienced excessive wet weather this past summer or fall, resulting in nitrogen loss and deficiencies. And while maximizing yield is key, he states that should not be the only goal of the management program.
