What appeared to be an 11th-hour effort to ban automated traffic enforcement cameras stalled in the Iowa Senate on Tuesday when a lawmaker needed for a crucial vote had to leave Iowa Capitol, which left supporters one vote short of a majority.

Sen. Brad Zaun, R-Urbandale, who sponsored an amendment to dismantle traffic cameras used to issue tickets for speed and red light violations, declined to identify the lawmaker. But he hopes to renew his effort before the 2018 session ends and suggested a ban on traffic cameras could become a bargaining chip in negotiations with House Republican leaders on other bills.

"No one has to doubt my persistence on this issue," said Zaun, who has been working for years to get rid of automated traffic enforcement cameras statewide.
