According to the March 2016 USDA Cattle on Feed report, U.S. cattle on feed inventory was 1% above last year at this time for a total of 10.8 million head. Iowa recorded 630,000 head which was a 5% decline from this time last year. Texas, Nebraska and Oklahoma led the way with 2.45, 2.42, and 2.16 million head, respectively. While states such as Minnesota, South Dakota, and Arizona have lower numbers of cattle on feed than Iowa, those states saw growth ranging from 12% to 22%.
