According to the July 2017 USDA Cattle on Feed Report, the total US inventory of cattle and calves in feedlots with 1,000+ capacity was 10.8 million head, up 4 percent from July 2016. The five leading states for cattle on feed include Texas (2.67 million), Nebraska (2.23 million), Kansas (2.19 million), Colorado (930,000), and Iowa (670,000). Iowa saw a 10% increase in cattle on feed compared to July 2016, Colorado saw a 9% increase, and Kansas had a 7% increase. Many other states also saw growth in cattle on feed numbers, except for Minnesota, South Dakota, and Arizona.
