Crude Oil Summary

  • The price of global crude oil fell this week on the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) by $1.45 per barrel over last week, currently priced at $71.39.
  • Brent crude oil fell $1.35 and is currently priced at $75.37.
  • One year ago, WTI crude sold for $112.40 and Brent crude was at $112.89.

Motor Fuels

  • As of Wednesday, May 17, the price of regular unleaded gasoline averaged $3.35 across Iowa according to AAA. 
    • Prices rose 2 cents from last week’s price and 77 cents lower than one year ago. 
    • The national average on Wednesday was $3.53, unchanged from last week’s price.
  • Retail diesel prices in Iowa fell 1 cent this week with a statewide average of $3.76. 
    • One year ago, diesel prices averaged $5.27 in Iowa. 
    • The current Iowa diesel price is 26 cents less than the national average of $4.02.
  • Wholesale ethanol held steady and is currently priced at $2.16.
  • The current Des Moines Terminal/Rack Prices are $2.44 for U87-E10, $2.84 for Unleaded 87 (clear), $2.66 for ULSD#2, $3.19 for ULSD#1, and $2.53 per gallon for E-70 prices.

Heating Fuels

  • Natural gas prices rose 16 cents at the Henry Hub reporting site and are currently priced at $2.35/MMbtu.
  • Continuing throughout the summer months, we will only report retail heating oil and propane prices in Iowa once a month.
