An unexpected turn toward protectionism in U.S. trade policy over the past decade threatens to undermine the country’s economic strength, economist Sam Gregg said last week at the Iowa Farm Bureau 2026 Economic Summit.
Gregg, president of the American Institute for Economic Research, argued that free trade provides broad benefits for consumers, businesses and farmers, even as skepticism of globalization has grown across the political spectrum.
