A few years back, I was traveling with a group of county Farm Bureau leaders, and I met several farmers who, when they learned I worked for the Spokesman newspaper, told me: "We need to get our story out to the consumer."

In the farm community, we hear a lot about how consumers feel disconnected from the farmers who grow their food. Yet farmers also feel this same disconnect, particularly from big-city consumers who may judge modern agricultural practices based on what they see on the Internet, TV and movies.

Farmers want to reach out to consumers; they want to answer questions. That’s why Iowa Farm Bureau offers many programs to help bridge the divide.
