Farmers working to harvest corn and soybeans are bracing for a long grind to the finish line as they battle snow, cold weather and propane shortages.

“This brings back memories from the 2009 harvest. There will be corn still in the field in December around here,” said Erik Oberbroeckling, a Clayton County Farm Bureau member. “Personally, we’ve got one day of soybeans and about 25% of our corn left to do.”

Just 64% of Iowa’s corn crop had been harvested as of Nov. 10, the slowest progress since 2009 and fourth slowest on re­cord since 1981, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) weekly crop progress re­­port.
