Northbound traffic on Interstate 35 in Decatur County will be shifted to a head-to-head pattern in the southbound lanes beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, May 4, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Chariton construction office.
The traffic pattern change is necessary to allow for grading and paving of the northbound lanes from just north of U.S. 69 to just south of Iowa 2. The work zone is expected to be in place until mid-September. Permitted oversized loads will be prohibited in the open lanes in the construction zone. There will be an 11-foot lane width restriction in the open lanes of traffic.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
