The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s (IFBF) Margin Management Webinar Series continues on July 30 at 1:00 p.m. with “The Basics of Cover Crops in Iowa,” an introductory discussion of the conservation practice that’s generating a lot of excitement among Iowa farmers.

In recent years, there’s been a sharp increase in the number of farmers planting cover crops.  Estimates are there were as many as 400,000 acres in Iowa last spring. “The Basics of Cover Crops in Iowa” will offer expert tips and insight for “first-time users” of cover crops.  Sarah Carlson from Practical Farmers of Iowa and Tracy Blackmer from Cover Crop Solutions will be the featured speakers and will explore what works, what doesn’t, and will help viewers understand the benefits of cover crops.

“Fall planting of cover crops has really taken off in Iowa.   More farmers are seeking information and are beginning to understand the benefits,” said Rick Robinson, IFBF environmental policy advisor.  “Cover crops can improve soil tilth, soil moisture retention and prevent soil erosion, in addition to providing water quality benefits by scavenging soil nutrients, but there are still many questions about agronomics and management.”
