The Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation, in partnership with the Dubuque County Ag in the Classroom program, will host a free professional development workshop for educators on July 14 and 15 at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, Iowa. This two-day immersive program offers K–12 teachers a unique opportunity to explore the journey of food from farm to table, while discovering ways to integrate real-world agricultural topics into classroom instruction.
On the first day, participants will dive into the science and logistics behind food production, processing, and distribution. Sessions will focus on essential topics such as temperature control, food safety protocols, packaging methods, and strategies to prevent contamination. Through hands-on activities, educators will gain a clearer understanding of the safeguards and systems that help ensure food quality and consumer safety.
Day two will shift focus to Iowa’s critical role in the global food system. Educators will explore the agricultural supply chain, from crops and livestock raised on local farms to the technologies driving innovation in food science. The workshop will provide practical ideas and lesson connections for science and social studies classrooms, helping students link STEM concepts to real-world agricultural applications.
This free professional development event also offers educators the chance to network, earn professional development credit, and take-home curriculum resources that align with state standards. Space is limited, and registration is required.
