Flashing blue and white safety lights on Iowa's snowplow trucks could be used statewide to reduce traffic crashes, under a bill approved Monday by the Iowa Senate.

Senate File 2163 would revise an existing state law that says Iowa's big orange snowplow trucks can be equipped only with amber-colored safety lights. That's to avoid confusion with safety lights used by emergency response vehicles.

Iowa Department of Transportation officials say that if the law is changed the snowplow trucks won't have flashing red lights so the public will still be able to distinguish emergency vehicles with flashing red and blue lights.
