In the tasteful elegance of the refurbished historic structure, the skill and artistry of the craft shines.

More than 30 quilts are displayed throughout what was once the J.C. Penney building on the south side of the Winterset town square in the Iowa Quilt Museum, the area’s latest attraction.

The museum officially opened in June to rave reviews and a steady stream of local and tourist traffic.

The Iowa Quilt Museum springs from Winterset’s rich history in the world of quilting. Quilting icons Marian Fons and Liz Porter originate from the central Iowa town and for many years operated their enterprise just a few doors down the street.

The duo met in a quilting class in 1976 and began teaching classes. Books on their passion soon followed, then the popular IPTV series Fons & Porter’s “Love of Quilting.” In 2001, they purchased Love of Quilting Magazine from Oxmoor House and, along with partner Dean Pieters, have grown Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting into the number one quilting magazine in the nation.
