On May 6, our chapter was able to meet and question Richard Fordyce, who is the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator. He is currently working under the Secretary of Agriculture for the Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services of the United States. 25 members and students attended as well as past and present officers of the Winterset FFA Chapter. Fordyce spoke on the importance of being an advocate for the agricultural community and shared why he believes our voices are important to push agricultural pursuits. Fordyce shared many ideas about the future of agriculture and how his job helps advance agricultural production across states. He also mentioned past leadership roles he has acquired throughout his years. Fordyce formerly served as state executive director for FSA in Missouri, as well as the director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture from 2013 to 2017. Additionally, Richard talked about his life on the farm. As a fourth-generation farmer from Bethany, Missouri, Fordyce and his wife have had two children and today grow soybeans, corn, and beef cattle on their family farm. Most importantly Fordyce spoke on the importance of FFA and how it will help shape us as people and as future leaders of America. He informed us on what he learned and experienced during his time in FFA. Meeting Richard Fordyce allowed our chapter to see how FFA will provide us with skills for a future career and why being an advocate in ag is important.
