Last fall, my family made our annual trip to a local pumpkin farm. We went early in September, hoping for the best pick of the season.

But I could tell the pumpkins weren’t in the best shape. Most were wet, soft and starting to mold. The farmer explained it had been a tough growing year. Heavy rains had repeatedly flooded the pumpkin patch during the summer.

A few weeks after our visit, the farm was forced to close early for the season, during what should have been its busiest (and most profitable) time.

It was a reminder that farming depends on the things no one can control: Midwest weather, unpredictable markets, and even international politics.

Yet even in hard years, Iowa farmers stay committed to what matters most, raising safe, nutritious food for your family.

Farmers always have faith, even in unpredictable times. Planting a seed or delivering a new calf is their way of holding onto hope for a brighter future.

And my own pumpkin story does have a happy ending. This fall, I found one perfect pumpkin growing in my backyard, sprouted from the seeds of those mushy pumpkins I tossed in the compost pile last year.

Even better, the local pumpkin farm reopened this September, and their pumpkins look fantastic.
