The Iowa Farm Bureau salutes its friend and honorary member Hayden Fry today on his 84th birthday. The Iowa Hawkeyes' legendary football coach has been a model of innovation and leadership, from his days growing up on the family farm through his 19 seasons as head coach at the University of Iowa. Fry says he is proud to have introduced the work ethic and leadership concepts he learned growing up on his Texas farm to an Iowa football team he took over after its 19 consecutive non-winning seasons and turned into one of the top programs in the Big Ten Conference. One of those concepts was identifying a "bell cow" player at many of the positions on his team -- a player after which peers would model their habits and attitude. There certainly aren't many "bell cows" quite like Hayden Fry, a man whose love for the state of Iowa and its citizens and fellow farmers was as intense as his love for the football teams full of college athletes he helped model into young men. America Needs Farmers and the Iowa Farm Bureau would like to wish coach Hayden Fry a happy birthday, and say thank you for all that you've done for the state of Iowa!
