Iowa Minute Transcript

Laurie Johns: Isn't technology great? We can start our cars with our cell phones. Technology has also improved an aspect of our driving by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. A new USDA study shows corn-based ethanol has 43% lower greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline. Technology makes it all possible. Ethanol plants today have improved not just how they turn corn, or corn stalks, into fuel - many of today's ethanol plants are more energy efficient, saving money at the beginning and making money at the end by feeding cows with the leftovers. Researchers such as Iowa State's Paul Gallagher see evidence of the industry progress.

Paul Gallagher (Iowa State University Economist): You could save about $1,000 over the life of a car if you switched from using straight gasoline to the E20 blends.

Laurie: Helping the environment, the Iowa economy, and farmers one tank at a time. Now that's pride at the pump. With your Iowa Minute, I'm Laurie Johns.
