As part of the two-year U.S. 63 reconstruction from Jefferson to Franklin streets in Waterloo, traffic switches will occur beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

The northbound lanes of U.S. 63 from Jefferson to Franklin streets will be reopened. A section of Franklin Street, which has been closed for reconstruction at the intersection with northbound U.S. 63, will also reopen.

Signals currently flashing all red will revert to red, green, and yellow cycles once traffic has been switched.

After traffic is switched, lane closures will occur on southbound U.S. 63 to remove pavement markings which were in a head-to-head traffic configuration. Lane closures will occur in spring 2019 to install the remaining sidewalks, brick pavers, and sodding in the northbound lanes.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
