Farmers hope for improved river traffic, infrastructure

All along the great rivers that drain the Heartland, farmers earn their living. The barge navigation on the rivers, like the Missouri, the Mississippi and the Illinois, impact an even broader swath of farmers across the Midwest.
In Danny Kuenzel’s work as secretary-treasurer of the Missouri Levee & Drainage District Association, he looks at flood control and navigation issues.
“You don’t have one without the other,” he says. “Flood control and navigation are the dominant features of a river system.”
Kuenzel, who farms in Franklin and Gasconade counties in East Central Missouri, says a deep river channel to allow for good navigation cuts down on flooding.
