Bob Joslin Excellence in Agriculture Award

This contest is designed as an opportunity for young farmers who are actively contributing and growing through their involvement in Farm Bureau and agriculture, to earn recognition. Participants are judged on their involvement in agriculture and leadership ability. Involvement and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations (i.e. civic, service and community) are also considered in judging. The Bob Joslin winner will have the opportunity to compete nationally in the Excellence in Agriculture Award.

Applications will be available in the Summer.

YOUNG FARMER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - Due May 1, 2008

This award recognizes young farmers for their efforts in both their chosen occupation and leadership achievement. The key is the growth and financial progress the candidate(s) have made since they started farming. Candidates complete a detailed application on their farm operation, financial information (confidentiality guaranteed), and leadership experience.

Click here for an application. The deadline is May 1, 2008.

The winner will be announced during the IFBF Annual Meeting in December.

  AG CHALLENGE - August 12, 2008

County Farm Bureau teams of up to four people compete against each other for fun, prizes and personal development while testing their knowledge in 11 ag areas. Questions are multiple choice. Contestants buzz in and gain or lose points based on the accuracy of their answers. Teams compete in single elimination matches.

  Young Farmer Discussion Meet

Individuals compete on a panel of three to six people in a free-wheeling style with no order of participation as if they were sitting around the kitchen table discussing a problem. They exchange ideas and information to solve the problem inherent in the topic. Each contestant is judged individually on cooperative attitude, problem solving & implementation, delivery, analysis of the topic, and opening & closing statements. The four topics are current ag issues and are selected by the AFBF Young Farmer & Rancher Committee.

The preliminary rounds are held during the Young Farmer Conference in January. The top four winners will advance to the state finals at the IFBF Annual Meeting in December.

What is the Young Farmer Program?
The Iowa Farm Bureau Young Farmer Program brings together young farmers from across the state of Iowa. The program , for farmers ages 18-35, provides leadership and participation opportunities designed to encourage young members to become active participants in the organization and the agricultural community at all levels – county, state and national.

Committee members conduct activities such as the discussion meet, young farmer leadership conference, ag challenge competition and achievement and excellence in agriculture member award programs. The committee also advises the Iowa Farm Bureau board of directors on farm policy issues that impact young farmers.

Who can join the Young Farmer Program?
Any young farmer who is looking for fellowship, educational opportunities, leadership development and fun with a group of other young farmers can join .
