ABOUT AG IN THE CLASSROOM

Ag in the Classroom program helps students understand the importance of agriculture in their daily lives as well as to Iowa's economy. Each county has an Ag in the Classroom coordinator, who provides schools in their county with materials, lesson plans and information on agriculture.

      POLK COUNTY

    The Polk County Farm Bureau Board has recently placed a renewed emphasis on the program and created a full-time position to assist Polk County educators in teaching about the agriculture and natural resources that are so important to our individual lives, the state of Iowa, and society.       CASS COUNTY

    Sent letters or emails to all teachers in the county letting them know what materials are available through the county and IFBF Ag in the Classroom programs.

      CHEROKEE COUNTY

    Distributed Ag Stats books to high schools and school libraries. Ag stats are great resources for math problems and research strategies!

      GUTHRIE COUNTY

    Held an after school program for elementary students at community library in Guthrie Center. The focus of the event was on the value of farming and all the roles farmers have in producing our food, fiber and fuel.

      REGION 3

    Local Farm Bureau’s worked with AEA to sponsor teacher/mentor luncheons and present info to 100+ teachers.

       BREMER COUNTY

    The county donated funds to teachers who's applications were turned down for the Teacher Supplement program due to funds being depleted.
    The county also created a survey that was distributed to all Bremer County elementary educators. The teachers who returned the survey was given a rose for their time. The teachers were asked:
    1. In your classroom, do you have activities related to Iowa Agriculture?
    2. Have you heard of the Ag in the Classroom program?
    3. Have you participated in the Teacher Supplement program?
    4. Are you interested in attending the Teacher’s Academy in June?
    5. Do you have any suggestions on how we can be of more help to you in supporting agriculture education in your classroom?

       SAC COUNTY

    Sponsor an ag coloring contest and gave away soy crayons. The sheets that the children colored were used as placemats for county member appreciation meal. Also at this time Farm Bureau members spoke to children about Iowa ag.

     

     


       JEFFERSON COUNTY

    Sent letters promoting the Ag in the Classroom program to 30 teachers and followed up with phone calls.

      MONONA COUNTY

    Created a tractor buddy program for the elementary school with three local implement dealers. Reached 180 students through the program.


       BUCHANAN COUNTY

    Produced a new Farm Fun Facts bookmark which was distributed to local libraries and classrooms.


       BUENA VISTA COUNTY

    Farm Bureau’s learning barn was used in the ISU Extension office during the summer for a program called Camp Tuesday. This was an activity open to anyone interested K-6th grade and was held for eight Tuesday’s. There were 69 youth who participated. Each week a different topic was used as the theme.

       BUTLER COUNTY

    County AITC coordinator held an open house for neighboring AITC coordinators so they could share ideas.

       JASPER COUNTY

    The county provided $50 grants to teacher to purchase AITC materials.
