With theft of hay and other valuable items on the rise, farmers are encouraged to talk to their neighbors about reporting suspicious activity they observe.

Farm Bureau provides a rewards program of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of perpetrators who commit crimes against property owned by Farm Bureau members.

Farm Bureau’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) also helps members whose property is victim to theft, arson or vandalism.

"We many times have our own investigations ongoing at the same time the police or fire departments do. In some cases, our resources and ability to fully investigate a situation can help in determining the cause of a loss," Scott Leighter, SIU manager, explains,

In 2012, the dedicated SIU investigated more than 1,000 cases and saved millions of dollars.

"Savings were the result of working with our members to identify leads, identifying the true cause of the loss and ensuring we only paid for valid claims," says Leighter.

Reward signs are free for members to post on their property to help deter would-be thieves, arsonists and vandals, while supplies last. Contact your local county Farm Bureau office or agent to request signs.
